Club Highlights

Local WGCF Garden Clubs are involved in their communities and that is where the action is.  Community beautification and service projects top the list, but club members certainly know how to learn and have fun also.   To feature your club’s activities on this page, submit them to WGCF.
Lake Wissota's Ambitious Project Continues
Picture
Lake Wissota Garden Club members began work this week on the Duncan Creek Shoreline Project in Irvine Park’s Native Wildflower Sanctuary in Chippewa Falls.
Funding of $2,193 for the project is being made available in part by the Community Needs Grant Fund, the Robert and Frances Bowe and Fred R. Bowe Memorial Fund, the Carey B. Kell Endowment Fund, and the Gerald H. and Ann C. Jacobson Fund through the Community Foundation of Chippewa County.
Existing native plants will be identified and saved in place and all non-native plants will be removed along a section of the park’s walking trail through the Sanctuary.  Replanting with over 600 Wisconsin native bulbs, wildflowers and shrubs is scheduled for completion by late June.
The ½ acre Sanctuary, established by Lake Wissota Garden Club in 2010, is located just south of the Duck Pond near the corner of Irvine Park and Wolfe Drives at the confluence of Duncan Creek and Spring Brook.

Recently the club's efforts were recognized on WQOW-TV.  Definitely gardening for good.

PORCH POTS
2020 was a hard one for the residents of nursing homes.  The Baldwin-Woodville Chamber of Commerce decorated around Baldwin Care Center with lights and the Botany Belles and Beaus Garden Club joined the fun by creating porch pots for all of the main entrances.

CUPS OF CHEER
Western Acres Garden Club, in the Milwaukee District, is a small but mighty club of 10 members.  We gathered together to work on a community project called “Cups of Cheer”.   One of our members suggested this project after reading an article in the National Gardner.
Our members donated coffee cups, tea cups and small containers which we filled with fresh plant material.  One of our member’s place of employment donated 5-gallon buckets of flowers and greens.  We were able to create 31 arrangements  (3 laundry baskets full) which were then disturbed at Kirkland Crossing in Pewaukee Wisconsin.  This is a senior living center which has independent, assisted, skilled nursing and memory care units.  The residents were thrilled to get a fresh flower arrangement during this bitter cold season.
We hope to continue this project through out the upcoming year.  It was so rewarding to see the smiles on the resident’s faces.  Come join us in this worth while project.

A key component of a WGCF Garden Club is community involvement.  Lake Shore Garden Club provides the design, plants and labor each year for 9 large planters at Sheboygan County Museum Planting Project.  From Left to right: Fran Teunissen, Donna Eirich, Roth Ann Van Staate, Karen Kasten and Dolores Raeder.
