Environmental School

The Environmental  School is comprised of four courses over a period of two years which emphasize appreciating, conserving, and protecting the land that sustains us. The ESS is based on reading materials, lectures, and tours. The official text for the school is “Living in the Environment” by G. Tyler Miller. Other recommended readings include, “Bringing Nature Home” by Douglas W. Tallamy, and “A Sand County Almanac” by Aldo Leopold. Course content includes information and study on ecology, environmental sciences, environmental issues, wildlife habitat and endangered wildlife, environmental sustainability, plants in our environment, environmental ethics, initiating school programs, and environmental stewardship. Oversight for this school is given by NGC, Inc. to assure credibility. Instructors for the school are professional educators with backgrounds in environmental studies or a related field.

ESS is open to anyone, whether or not they are a garden club member. Garden club members who attend all four courses and successfully pass the exams receive a consultant certification.

Trivia fact: WGCF sponsored the first Environmental  School in the country.
